Hello folks! I am usually on the Gardenweb forums in the birding sites or the pond forum. I am in forest land in West Michigan. I have a small 600 gal pond, there are 2 small ponds above with waterfalls leading to the 500 gal below. I have assorted Gold Fish from 10+ years old to babies from last year. I am pretty heavy on fish load. I am a 5 minute walk to a nice lake with a marsh in between. I had noticed a real decline in my frog population over the past few years, infact I have not had tadpoles in 4 years.
This year I have more frogs than ever (I see 20 at a time and I have lots of plants), most are Green Frogs around 1" to 2" and a few around 3". I have had frogs overwinter in the 500 gal pond safely and a few that tried to overwinter in the 2- 50 gal pond that died. I am afraid if I get to many frogs trying to overwinter it will increase the load on the pond and I will lose both fish and frogs over the long frozen months. I would like to know if I should gather up the majority of the frogs and take them to the marsh. I know a lot will leave on thier own but my taking them will insure the make it there safely. Is this a good idea? If so when? I would love for them to stay as long as is safe. Thanks!

Posted on your Facebook site.
We have a tree toad who has adopted us, our hot tub and refuses to leave. I've tried to replace him on trees, moss covered rocks, the usual flora....but Kermit comes back. Sits on the panel of the hot tub so that when we open the cover," TADA! I'm here!"frogsmile
He knows (I swear!!) when it's time to move from one end of the panel to the other, when the cover comes down and he comes closer to my face when I'm in the tub.
What am I going to do with him when Michigan winter comes? He'll stay warm enough, but what will he eat?
Shall I get him ready for an inside terrarium?

Hi there

I have joined the forum to find out if anyone can give me the names of red striped frogs. I am a coordinator of a conservation partnership called Kosciuszko to the Coast (K2C) with 11 partners including some government agencies.

Someone recently told me they had seen a frog with a distinct red stripe down its back. We are in a cold climate at about 700m an hour south of Canberra near the Snowy Mountains.

I said I would try and find out some more about it. I looked on the net and emailed them a photo of the Limnodynastes salmini - Salmon-striped Frog
He is a dumpy frog or whites tree frog. Iv had him for about 7-8 months give or take, when I got him he was the size of a quarter, he's about the size of a golf ball now I think lol.
He is living in a 20gallon tall tank with lots of decorations.
To tell you the truth I know nothing about him other than he is a frog that croaks very loudly in my room, I dont even know if he really is infact a he, his name is Jaba btw(original I know). So i'd love any tips, facts or any advice at all :]
Also will he be more comfortable in a bigger tank or is that a good size? I was thinking about getting him a 40gallon.

here's a picture of the infamous Jaba

My name is Drew and I am obviously a new member on these boards. A little about myself. I am an avid scuba diver and have kept reef and fresh water aquariums for 5 years. I have recently moved to Virginia and have had to take down all my tanks and decided to look into building terrariums with tree frogs with freshwater fish (rasbora, tetras, killies) or snails. Really interested in mossy frogs. Also looking into dark frog species only tanks. Interested to see how many people on here went from salt water reefs to frogging and if you still maintain a reef tank. Since I broke down my tank, I felt like it was time for a change and I like the frogs as most are captive breed. Anyway, that is me and I will be lurking the boards and asking questions if I can't find answers through browsing and searching. :D

Hi, just wanted to introduce myself, my name's Des and I've been a herper for about 2 to 3 years, keeping mainly boas and pythons. However after selling a large part of my collection, though keeping my malagasy ground boa and guyana boa, I decided to explore monitors and amphibians. I've seen many frogs and salamanders in herp shops, pacmans and darts, but I'm primarily interested in White's Tree frogs. I've found this forum useful for research on amphibians in general bigapplause. I enjoy drawing frogs and have always admired their vibrant coloration and general cuteness. ( And deadliness in the case of wild dart frogs! )

Hi,

My name is Shauno and I have been a fan of dart frogs/mantellas since reading a Nat Geo article in the late 70's- early 80's??

I am originally from Tucson AZ and have collected/maintained almost every reptile and amphibian the area has to offer - which is vast for this desert area. I now live in a Portland Oregon burb and currently just keep freshwater aquaria as this is all I have time for.

I have been keen on following news about frog populations around the world and commend you all for taking your time to share, educate and captively breed frogs- to all whom ever find their way to this board. I have been lurking around here for about a week to get somewhat up to speed on the captive care, current breeding techniques and availability of these beautiful dart frogs.

I look forward to chating you all up, and especially the day I acquire my first dart frogs (tough to decide on which of the easier sp. to start with as all are so beautiful).

Thank you- Shauno

Hello all, my name is Daniel and I am new to the forums. I live in Huntingdon, Tn with my wife and five kids on our small farm. My wife and I met in Memphis, Tn where we were both employed at the Memphis Zoo. Recently my children have discovered the large population of tree frogs that live around our farm and watching them feed around the light on our porch has become a nightly activity. My wife kept dart frogs while she attended collage at a teaching zoo in Gainsville, Fl and we thought it would be fun and educational for the children to help us create a vivarium and raise some exotic frogs. We are planning to start with a small vivarium and once we get it established we are going to decide what frogs we are going to start with. We are leaning towards dart frogs as my wife has experience with them, but we are also considering red eyes or giant tiger leg monkey frogs. We stumbled on this forum while researching vivarium construction and have found a lot of very useful info. We look forward to exchanging ideas and info with everyone.

Hi Everyone!
I made the mistake of going to a fair last week... It was a mistake because I am a sucker for the poor poor animals they give away, and I always end up taking one home! Anyways I have never raised a tad pole or any reptile for that matter, and I am hoping to get some help. I am pretty sure my little guy is a bullfrog but I have no idea what type of BF exactly. If someone could let me know that would be a good start!
When I "won" him, he was in a bowl about 2 times the size of him. Since thn I have purchased a 10 gallon tank. I filled it about half way. put 1 tsp of conditioner in the water, and set him by the window. I live in So Cal in the Valley so it gets HOT. Is this an ok place for him? I also purchased a small floating island because I read online that as he changes he will want to crawl out. It is too small for when he becomes an actual frog so before I take it out of the box, I want to be sure I even need it. I also filled the bottom of the tank with some stones. (more for decor purposes than anything else) Is this ok? I do not have a filter, heater, or lamp, do I need these things? Also, when he does become a frog, is a 10 gallon tank big enough for him? and what modifications will I need to make to it?...Here are some more questions (I am full of them :) )
When can I expect him to become a frog?
When do I start feeding him live foods?
Do I have to feed him live food?
Even though I do not see him eat the food, is he eating it?
How do I know if he is healthy?
What temp should the water be at?
Can I and should I put other creatures in the tank with him (fish, beta fish, other frogs, snails,)
How often do I need to change the water?
When changing the water do I need to change all of it?
If I get a filter will I still need to change the water often?
Should I put anything else in the tank with him besides the floating island and the rocks?
He is always just sitting/laying in the bottom corner of the tank... is this normal?
I purchased both flake fish food AND tadpole pellets as well as tryed the lettuce method. which is best? (again I have not seen him eat ever!)
I attached 2 pictures, 1 being him close up in his origional tank, the other 2 are of his new tank with the black rocks and the island....
Thanks in advance for you help! I am sure I will have a million more questions as time goes by, I just want to be sure I am not killing the little guy!

Hi all, i have a now 16 year old african bullfrog i got at at herp show. its the lone survivor of a number of frogs(budgett's and horned) i had mostly in the 1990's. that's a testament to it's hardiness.

i may be getting frog fever again. i am thinking about setting up a 30 gal tank with half a dozen albino clawed frogs. they are beautiful as adults, completely aquatic, and extremely easy to maintain, and just like a tank of fish, very relaxing to watch.

i might get back into horned frogs again, but i learned the space/maintenance requirements for these requires a greenhouse, no way around it. aquariums are simply the wrong way to house these larger frogs. ideally, my next house will have a greenhouse addition i can simply open a door and walk into.

i used read all the mags, but the internet has blown that source of info into the past. i look forward to conversing with an experienced group of hobbyists to get correct info and culture tips, and maybe share what i can remember from my past mistakes.

Hello, my names Molly, and I just got a frog from a friend and, like all my pets, I like learning as much about them as I can. He's about a year old, a Fowler's Toad. My friend got him and a few others out of a pond near her house as tadpoles. Her and her son caught a bunch and watched them grown. They kept them in her garden for a long time, but kept this one in the house. He's missing a leg, and my friend was worried he might not make it in the wild. They've moved recently and needed to find him a new home. I had to have him, I have several broken pets and love taking care of them, I knew he would fit right in.

Right now he's not in the best home. I'm looking for a BIG tank on Craigslist, but he'll get a 10 gallon this weekend when I get paid. He's in a 5 gallon paint bucket (don't worry, there was never any paint in it). He's got a layer of dirt on the bottom and peat moss on top, which he's currently nesting in, and a shallow bowl of rain water.

Last night about sundown he ate 6 crickets. I didn't know how many to feed him, but he seemed to be ravenous. My friend said she only fed him worms and he wouldn't eat crickets, but I gave him both, he ignored the worms and ate the crickets. *shrugs* We let him play in the front yard for about an hour when the sun went down and realized he doesn't move very well, and tends to hop in a circle. Makes him easy to catch, though. He chirped a little while he was out there and seemed happy enough, and he doesn't mind being held or picked up at all, probably because my friend's son picked all the frogs and toads up a lot while he had them. He's about an inch wide and postures and blows himself up when he sees the cats, which, to me, are signs that he's healthy. As I said, he ate 6 crickets and I'm sure he would have eaten more, but I didn't have any more. I'm not sure how much or how often he should eat, really. Lucky, I work at a bait shop, so getting crickets, wax worms, meal worms, whatever he might eat, is really easy. I expect him to be fat and happy.

As I said, he's missing a leg. We call him Gimpy for now (my husband's idea). I'm not sure if he needs any special care because of this, or if it will shorten his life span, but any input would be great.

As for me, I also have 3 cats, 2 of them are special needs kittys, and had a betta with a congenital fen defect. His back fen was small and pointed; Sadly, we lost him in a fire a few months ago. I have a daughter, Gwen, who's 8 years old and loves animals as much as I do, and is enjoying having a frog, she's always wanted one.

I know I shouldn't have a wild frog, and I expect some people to tell me to let him go, but after seeing him in action in the yard, I have a feeling he would be at a serious disadvantage. As I said, he's in a 5 gallon paint bucket.. I leave the lid off, he can't jump out. I have no plans of letting him go, and will try to take care of him the best I can.

Hoping to learn a lot here and meet some nice people. Please be kind, I'm a total noob with frogs, but I'm willing to learn!

We have some toads...1 fire bellied toad purchased, 1 gray tree frog and 3 toads caught on the family farm. The 2 big toads are by themselves, while the tree frog, fire bellied toad and small american toad are together. Tanks are 10 gallon aquariums.

I have them on aquarium gravel at the moment, but will get substrate. I also plan on putting a couple of branches in for the tree frog to climb. The large toads have a potted bonzai tree in there at the moment (needed light as wife had it in a dark room and the leaves fell off).

We feed them crickets. I have a plant strip light that I sort of go back and forth with from the tanks. I just bought a plant/aquarium light to go in an aquarium fixture, but the kid broke the starter, so I have to get another one.

We also have a heat lamp bulb in a brooder lamp from Wal Mart's pet section (I got the purple, night use one), but I'm not sure if we really need it. The screen top is hard plastic on the sides with a middle strip of screen where a hood light would go. It's easy to put melt marks in the plastic of the light is not centered. It is easy to use as it has slide slips to fasten down, and round ports that come out to feed them.

I have a heat rock (from a snake a long time ago) that I'm thinking of using. Again, not really sure if we need it. I'm going to put thermometers in the tanks. Temps stay from about 68-70 with a/c on high up to mid-70s. Not sure about this winter. Will the toads hibernate in this environment? I know our box turtles shut down, regardless. We keep them in a tub full of topsoil and mulch in a back room over the winter.

At the present time, we have water in the tanks with a depression in the middle of the gravel in one; a pet water bowl in the other tank. We mist both tanks daily with a spray bottle.

We feed them crickets a couple of times a week. The little ones get .12 each crickets from Petco, while the big toads get large crickets from Gander Mountain ($1.99 for a "suck-a-tube full"...). I'll probably dust them with vitamins.

We keep screen tops on the tanks and they are kept next to a window which has subdued lighting from the backyard.

Anyway, that's about it. Any suggestions?

I've been searching online for some expertise with a very peculiar problem. I recently moved into a new appartment and have found 12 tree frogs in my kitchen over the past 45 days. My wife is very squemish about all reptiles so I'm constantly on frog patrol. While I always escort my visitors out to the near by landscaping, I can't seem to locate where they are entering my appartment. The building maintenance people have looked high and low and have sealed every concievable entry point but when I went to make coffee this morning...there was another one (see picture). They are stumpted, I'm stumped and I need some help.

I'm hoping that someone on this forum may have some recommendations or suggestions for how to keep these cute little guys out of my kitchen. Some details - I live in Marin County, CA (North of San Francisco) in an old appartment building that sits on a hill near the bay and an old quarry. There are lots of trees and ivy covered planters around. Finally, the appartment was recently remodeled.

Any and all suggestions welcome!

Hello everyone,

My name's Colleen, I'm in the Southeast, (might be an Auburn fan. ;) ) and have a 3 year old overly obsessed with frogs. We recently had a tadpole outbreak in our unkept swimming pool and I came here looking for answers on what the heck to do with them. I'm going to take a few pictures and post in the next few days to get some identification and find out how to handle them. I'd guess we have around 50 tadpoles. We have a pond with a few bullfrogs and a few other frogs I haven't identified and I think they are tadpoles from one of the non-bullfrogs. I'm hoping so at least since I've read tadpole to frog for a bullfrog can be 2-3 years! Anyway, I'll post more information when i start a thread if I can't find one that will help, although I imagine you already have someone on here wondering what the heck to do with a ton of unexpected tadpoles. :)

Today, someone in the floral department at the whole foods I work at had this little frog leap from a bouquet of flowers, and somehow they caught it. After a few hours of exchanging owners in a little plastic container it landed in my hands and I decided to take it home for a better life(hopefully). However, I have no idea what kind of frog it is, nor could the workers a the petco nearest to me help identify it. He gave me a sort of shotgun strategy of taking care of it(soil, worms, maintain high humidity). While that might be okay, it also might really NOT be okay so any assistance in identifying him would be awesome.

No idea where the flowers came from, and asking around no one knew either. He(maybe she?) is about an inch long, a pale sort of yellow, with very light brown spots on him(maybe her??). I have a picture of poor quality because all i have at the moment is my phone:

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out. And hopefully I can contribute to the community eventually. =]

I've recently adopted 5 fire-bellied toads -- all of whom are very happy, healthy and active. This past weekend I adopted (from Petsmart) a White's Tree Frog. He is a healthy size, about 9 months old, but VERY VERY shy and burrows into the substrate to hide. I hope to learn from all of you via this forum . . . but I would like some advice as to how long is too long for him to adapt to his new home.

They need like needle size crickets ( and well I can't find those) they aren't eating the fruit flies and the worms we have found are still WAY to big. What should we do?
Most of them are stil tadpols, is there something that is good to feed them while they are still in that state to get them to bulk up? :confused:Should we be adding other fish bacteria water? ( we have like 25 fish tanks so yeah..) Will it help them.. can they feed off that?

Thanks for the message and I'm looking forward to learning about the little toads and frogs that I've accumulated over the past few weeks. I have a great drainage ditch in my back yard that takes about three days to drain. The ditch fills up with tadpoles that wouldn't live more than a few days because of our hot! Texas sun. I collected at least 600 tadpoles after our last rain. They were doing fine in a little swimming pool with pond water for a few weeks but one night some carnivorous animal invaded their environment and I could only save about 70 tads. I apparently have several species of tads and three morphed today. I'm hoping that by posting some picture, perhaps some of the members can help identifying them. This should be a lot of fun for me and my grandsons for the next 2-3 weeks. Some morphed today and some haven't even thought about morphing. I'll be posting some pictures soon. Thanks again, Linda.

Hello everybody!
I just joined today, and I have to admit I'm a total newbie. I've been interested in frogs for a while, but only recently have I started to research into getting one. I am interested in tree frogs, arrow frogs and milk frogs most of all, but I won't be buying anytime soon.I have a lot more research to put in!

I finally joined a frog forum as i have been meening to for a while now. I currently own 4 pacman frogs 3 sub adults and 1 adult they are in a 75 gallon devided with plexy glass and hopefully will be moving them into a 125 as soon as i can. I also have a 10 gallon temporary set up until i move with 2 mossy frogs, a red eyed tree frog, and a fire salamander. I have been working on a 110 gallon community tank for a while now and it is finally almost done after buying about $300 worth of supplies. Some of my other animals include 3 bearded dragons, a ball python, a green cheek conure, 2 sun conures, 4 fish tanks, a koi pond, and lots of empty tanks. These are some pictures of my pacmans my adult high red is my pride and joy it took me a very long time to find one with as much red as he has. In the future i hope to have a dendrobates tank set up. I also work at a local pet store here in town but we dont really cary frogs. We hand pick all of our animals from reptile shows and hopefully i will be attending my first show in october at tinley in chicago.

Hello once again. Iam back. I went to puerto rico last week. Gosh let me tell you. I heard alot of frogs over there. A frog called "coqui" constantly chirps. They are hard to find so I couldnt see them. But are easy to hear. There were other typesof tree frogs around. But cant make them out since I dont remember well.

I sometimes wonder if you can keep the "common" coqui as pets. Since they are an infestation in hawaii. There are more species of these. But I never dared to ask? Anywho. If anyone ever gets the chance to see one. itll become your favorite frog. It sure is mine. :] I constantly saw brown anoles. I saw a rare "green" anole. Well rare to puertorico. I saw a giant snake. A LOT of green iguanas(adults) and I saw a type of plated lizard? It looked like a plated. It was fun.
