Things got a little confused during feeding time tonight. Fatty, adult female gray treefrog, had nabbed a cricket from behind and was working on swallowing it. It was still alive and maybe 1/2 of the way hanging out of her mouth when Waldo, adult male gray treefrog who is a little bit (but not much) smaller than Fatty, decided this struggling cricket would be a good prey item. I mean it was upside down and rather helpless looking so I don't blame him.

At the moment he struck, Fatty decided to help the cricket down her gullet with her hand. Waldo, whose aim is normally impeccable, ended up with a mouthful of hand, and had Fattys hand in his mouth nearly up to the wrist. At this point I was somewhat concerned and opened the cage and put two fingers on Waldos shoulders and gently pulled him back. Happily he released her hand and everyone seems ok.:)

So... does this sort of thing happen often and would it likely have sorted itself out if I hadn't intervened? It looked like an honest mistake by Waldo, but I'm not sure he would have stopped trying to swallow on his own, and this seems like it might have been bad for Fattys hand/arm (he surely couldn't get much more in). I know multitudes of people feed groups of frogs together everyday, so many body parts must end up in mouths they don't belong. I've just never seen it happen, so give me some reassurance!

Hello all,

Your toad care article has been very informative. I just caught a wild toad. I have put him in a 20 gallon tank with 2-3 inches of coconut husk. He has some live plants, rocks, and a hollow log. He seems pretty happy with the whole set up.
The first day I got him I fed him 3 worms which he ate right away. Then he dug a hole and buried himself. Its been 3 days and he hasnt come out yet. Is he going to come out when he wants more food? Do I just wait until he is out of his hole and then add food? Or do I add food to get him to come out? Hes not going to starve down there right?

Thanks for any help! :)

Hello, I'm Pablo. Live in the North of Spain. Yesterday I went to the woods in my bike, and found this fela in the grass and stoped by. When I looked closely noticed that the poor toad had something wrong: some kind of illness in the skin, maybe a virus, some larvae, fungus or other. I know those things are killing a lot of anfibians so I took it to be sure it's not contagious.

The animal is a Bufo bufo juvenile of 4 cm from Cantabria, Spain. It has superficial adhesion of some little tubular white particles on its skin,at the back and side of it's head and some on the lower back. The tiny white things can be taken out with a forceps but the animal seem to suffer so I'll wait until I know more.

Please help me identify and treat this thing on the animal skin.

Hello folks! I am usually on the Gardenweb forums in the birding sites or the pond forum. I am in forest land in West Michigan. I have a small 600 gal pond, there are 2 small ponds above with waterfalls leading to the 500 gal below. I have assorted Gold Fish from 10+ years old to babies from last year. I am pretty heavy on fish load. I am a 5 minute walk to a nice lake with a marsh in between. I had noticed a real decline in my frog population over the past few years, infact I have not had tadpoles in 4 years.
This year I have more frogs than ever (I see 20 at a time and I have lots of plants), most are Green Frogs around 1" to 2" and a few around 3". I have had frogs overwinter in the 500 gal pond safely and a few that tried to overwinter in the 2- 50 gal pond that died. I am afraid if I get to many frogs trying to overwinter it will increase the load on the pond and I will lose both fish and frogs over the long frozen months. I would like to know if I should gather up the majority of the frogs and take them to the marsh. I know a lot will leave on thier own but my taking them will insure the make it there safely. Is this a good idea? If so when? I would love for them to stay as long as is safe. Thanks!

Today I had Baby outside in it's tank and decided to let he/she get some fresh air. I put the Babes on a plant on the deck for a while and it's incredable how much better he/she is looking. Here is today's pic 9/6 (far right) on the plant and the last pics 8/28(far left) and 9/4 (center). When I finally brought Baby in he looked like the 1st pic, which is why I brought Baby in to care for. When he/she was very thin, he/she was also very dark..from dark green - black. Now since he/she has been improving and eating the color has remained lighter and greener..good sign, I think. AAAAWWWW Baby just pooped on the leaf, must be eating enough for that..LOL

Posted on your Facebook site.
We have a tree toad who has adopted us, our hot tub and refuses to leave. I've tried to replace him on trees, moss covered rocks, the usual flora....but Kermit comes back. Sits on the panel of the hot tub so that when we open the cover," TADA! I'm here!"frogsmile
He knows (I swear!!) when it's time to move from one end of the panel to the other, when the cover comes down and he comes closer to my face when I'm in the tub.
What am I going to do with him when Michigan winter comes? He'll stay warm enough, but what will he eat?
Shall I get him ready for an inside terrarium?

She becomes active when I take her out to feed her, but as soon as she goes back in the tank, she burrows under her moss until the next night when I take her out. Also, not to be gross, but her stool is kind of runny from what I have seen. I feed her 2 meal worms every 2 days and dust once a week. Any suggestions? I want to take good care of her! Please help. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks! frogsmile

Hello my friends,

The dendrobatids are a group of animals that have come to captivate my attention since many years ago, but I've never felt prepared before to mantain some by many reasons: difficulty in finding food, difficulty in recreate a tropical climate into the terrarium and lack of knowledge.

For a couple of weeks I've been searching, reading and learning more about dendrobates, and this aroused on me a great desire to keep these animals.
I have to say that my experience in keeping any type of amphibians is absolutely none!
On the other hand, I've been keeping reptiles (snakes) and arthropods for many years, some of them tropicals (Corallus hortulanus, Centruroides margaritatus, Babycurus jacksoni), and that gave me experience to deal with temperatures, humidity, ventilation and the basic parameters that are necessary for the proper establishment of a microclimate in a terrarium.

I took to myself that if I entered the amazing world of Dendrobates species would have to be with that I really liked, and so all would have to be a well-defined project with a plan for captive propagation respecting absolutely the genetic lineages found in the wild.

The species I really like belong to the genus Ranitomeya, and here start the problems. All the online literature that I've read (already completely devoured this fantastic article about imitators http://www.frogforum.net/dart-frog-m...-breeding.html) says that this genus is composed by very very tiny frogs that you experts call by thumbnails and because of that are not suitable for a begginer!

Well, the question is: Can I start with species belonging to the genus Ranitomeya (imitator, one of my favourite) without having necessarily to pass through Dendrobates sp. to gain experience?

I consider myself a responsible person, I allways read ton's of articles and collect opinions for more experienced persons before even thinking about buying any animal.

Sorry about that big text but I think that is necessary to you understant my situation!

Best regards

This morning I heard a faint, crackley, "croaking" sound coming from the Terrarium with 4 "female" PCF's. I have never heard any croaking sounds before.
When I looked Pako's white throat was slightly ballooned out, but it was still white. Do females do this? Or could it have been Alto the "female" behind her. Alto is starting to look more "male" as she matures and gets bigger.

Here are some pics I took this morning. What do you think?

My boyfriend bought a bulllfrog tadpole( at least I think it's one) recently. It's large and a bright green colour. ANYWAY, I've never seen a metamorphosis start to finish, and I notice the tadpole is looking a little baggy. There's a little hole in the baggy skin near his front, which i'm assumin is where his front legs will come from, but...he doesn't even have back legs yet. Is that normal?

Edit: I found this photo on google
I would love to make it a staple along with dubia roaches. I remove all the dirt off the worms before feeding. I use hemostats to drop the worm in front of the pacman. The wet sticky worms end up getting covered in cocco coir while he is eating them. Im useing the fine coco coir. Do I have to worry about impaction? I really dont want to remove him for feeding and stress him out.Thanx

Hi...I am debating whether or not to let my grays hibernate. I would like to breed them and I read here that if you want to breed then you need to let them cycle, hibernate. What are the pros and cons of hibernating vs not hibernating other than the breeding, and if I did choose to hibernate can I just set them on the porch in a critter keeper with soil in it? and the care sheet says to stop feeding them in october and after 2 weeks then start the hibernating...I live in Ohio so it should be cold enough come mid october november to put them outside for hibernating right?
I would miss them terribly while they hibernate :(

I've had these guys now for almost a month and they are all doing very well. I can't get over how fast they are growing though. When I took these froglets in they were mostly about 1/2" and some weren't even 1" yet and now most are at least 1" and very, very chubby..just they way I like my pets( you should see my bunnies..Whoa!).
After their dinner last pm I took several pics of most of them who were more cooperative. The larger ones, which I have had longer, are very calm and when I scoop them up for dinner they jump on my hand...I really think they know now that this means it's dinner.
Because I was side tracked over the 2..now 1 tiny froglet that's not doing well, I almost forgot it was a feeding day. I am feeding them every other day and they eat better this way. I passed by their "house" and they were all in view, very odd for them to be seen and bouncing around, and I then realized it was time for their dinner, but they knew for sure. When I was watching them in the "dining room" container and they were stretched out and moving around, I could really see how large they've gotten. I am very happy to see that they are doing so well.
However, there are 2 smaller ones , that for what ever reason, are not eating as much or at all, still look ok, but thin. Since I have another "dining room" container set up with fruit flies, after I took out all the frogs that ate like piglets with crickets bulging out their sides(looks really freaky) I left those 2 in the cricket container for a while. I thought possibly they were intimidated or bullied by the larger froglets. I usually watch them eat and I don't see much fighting or problems, but I am not well versed in frog lingo and gestures to know it for sure. After a 1/2 hour or so they still hadn't gotten any crickets so that's when I took them out and dropped them in the fruit fly container.....and then success. I had to actually get more fruit flies for them they ate so many. Very happy to see them eat, glad I had the fruit flies.
When can I determine their sexes? I am not going to name them until I have a better idea of which sex they are and more importantly get to know their personalities and quirks.
Right now I have 9, but I don't think I will keep all of them. I am waiting to see how they adapt, eat or don't eat, etc. The ones that don't seem to be thriving in captivity I'll let go.
So here are a few pics of my growing babies. I can't fit all the pics so I'll continue on this thread.

We'll I knew this was going to happen, but Baby's friends, we finally named Tiny, died:( Day before yesterday, Tiny actually looked better, ate lots of bugs and even pooped!! Then yesteray early feeding Tiny didn't eat much, then in the late feeding (since I got the Friut flies I've been feeding then 2x's daily) was sitting on a leaf when I was taking him/her out and then disappeared....I found Tiny sprawled out on the bottom upside down and.....definately dead. So sad.
Baby perked up yesterday and was eating bugs and pooped too!(interested what you'll talk about w/pets and children) I had Baby outside in it's tank and seemed to perk up..hot and humid, so I put the tank under a table, made sure all was safe and secure and left him out last night.
Baby is stuck to the side of it's tank and I am scared to touch him yet. When I saw Tiny he/she looked alive so it was quite the shock.
I finally got the fruit flies and now he/she dies!!! I think they just went too long without.
Tiny's been in wake all night, 1. too make sure he absolutely dead and 2. until I figure out what to do with the little guy..they don't make coffin's for small frogs.....maybe they should!

Hi there

I have joined the forum to find out if anyone can give me the names of red striped frogs. I am a coordinator of a conservation partnership called Kosciuszko to the Coast (K2C) with 11 partners including some government agencies.

Someone recently told me they had seen a frog with a distinct red stripe down its back. We are in a cold climate at about 700m an hour south of Canberra near the Snowy Mountains.

I said I would try and find out some more about it. I looked on the net and emailed them a photo of the Limnodynastes salmini - Salmon-striped Frog

I have a limited quantity "dwarf" Mag leaves. They are really cool and not easy to find. I have one large tree in my collection area with this leaf habit and although all Mag trees produce a variety of sizes, this magnificent tree has very small leaves. I will probably only get around 10 cf of leaves from this tree for the season, so when they're gone, that's it until next spring.

They would be hand sorted with no debris. I'll need to get $18/cf plus shipping. Min order is 1cf, but the best value is the 2 to 2.9 cf quantities since the base shipping is between $9 and $13 for 1 cf, with the larger boxes only adding $2 to $3 to shipping. (UPS increases the shipping rate for boxes 3 cf or larger).

So I know from reading that WTF are active mostly at nighttime, and since the lights will be off in the tank i was wondering if putting a very small black light at the top of the tank shining in to see whats going on would be ok? is the Purple light the black light would give off bad for the frog or damaging at all? And if it would is there any other type of light that would be ok to use at night not all night long but i mean to see better into the tank.
