Next summer I'm going to attempt to breed my milkies. It looks like I have two males and a female based on their current size differences.
I've pretty much figured everything out except how to construct a rain chamber. I hear they aren't completely necessary, but I would really like for this to be successful so it's something I'm very interested in.
Those of you that have built rain chambers, how did you do it? Right now I'm looking into buying an Exo Terra Monsoon Rainfall Misting System. It looks well built, and for the price it had better be lol.

Also, who here has experience breeding these frogs? They have a reputation for being difficult to breed, while other accounts I've read had theirs breed with little to no effort put forth.

(Next will be the dart tank, as the pink foam shelves take longer to cut ;)).
Messy, but fun! :D

Well, it appears I've lost another frog :(

This evening, when feeding my amphibians, I went to check on Nivose, my red legged froglet. He's grown to 1.5 inches, and is sturdily built. I placed a dusted pinhead cricket on a rock in the water section of his tank, and let him be to feed the rest of my amphibians. When I went back to check on him, he had a partially digested cricket in his mouth, and was floating on the water, arms and legs spread out. There was some kind of mucus secretion coming from his mouse too. Panicking a bit, I picked him up, and watched as his heartbeat faded and stopped :grey:

I have no idea what killed him :confusion: maybe it could've been Chytrid, stress from me being too near his tank, no idea. I'm already planning to bury him tommorow, and I'm going to boil and bleach all of the contents of his tank, just in case it was Chytrid, as well as keeping a very close watch on my other amphibians. Whatever it was that killed him, this has hit me hard.

I'm thinking, considering that Pacific Chorus frogs and bullfrogs are resistant to Chytrid (Not sure on Green frogs (Rana Clamitans) or Long toed Salamanders (Ambystona Macrodactylum)) that I might've accidentally transmitted it to him, or he had it already. Either way, this is a shock, and very saddening. I've lost 2 frogs in less than 3 months, Bumpy's had and is still having a rough time (see here: http://www.frogforum.net/frogs/23386...infection.html) and now this....

Well, that little diva Bumpy may be going through another problem again :grumpy:

As you may or may not have known, my adult Green frog (Rana Clamitans) experienced a double case of tetany and giardia, from which she fully recovered from 2 weeks ago. I have her in her 20 gallon, with a proper, Fluval U1 filter, plenty of cover and a background. She is on a diet of crickets, dusted with a calcium mix every other feeding and a multivitaimin mix weekly. She is not accepting any earthworms I offer, unfortunately, and is an extremely skittish frog.

Recently, I spotted an odd, white spot on her back, beside her spine and in the middle, 1/3 or 1/4 the size of a pencil eraser. Bumpy is acting normal, and eating normally, and I have been doing extra water changes. She also has a layer of duckweed in her tank, which I placed in around the time I spotted the white dot. From what I know, dots like these are often the sign of a fungal infection, but I have felt this dot and it feels just like the rest of her skin. This dot has not changed at all for the 3 days I have been monitoring it, so I am unsure what to do.

Unfortunately, I do not have the money to treat a full-scale infection if it requires heavy-duty medications. I have some panacur, unflavored pediaylte, and salt on hand, however.

I can try and get a photo, but Bumpy is an extremely skittish frog, so it will be difficult.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated,

Thanks,

Hi All,

In recent years, researchers have found toxins in a wide array of snakes and lizards formerly believed to be harmless…even the Bearded Dragon is not above suspicion (please see below), but venomous pythons? While working at the Bronx Zoo, I was several times called upon to assist in confiscating snakes that had appeared in the pet trade before we learned of their potentially lethal venom (i.e. Asian Watersnakes, genus Rhabdophis). All evidence of toxicity must be taken seriously…bear in mind that both the Boomslang and Savanna Twig Snake were thought to be harmless until each killed a prominent herpetologist! The recent discovery of toxins in the mucus of certain pythons poses a unique and unexpected concern for snakebite victims.\

Studies at the University of Queensland have revealed the presence of toxins in the mucus of several python species. Read more here Venomous Pythons? - Snakebite Victims Benefit from New Research

I'm thinking of breaking down and investing in a hygrotherm, along with a fogger. Sources tell me distilled water is best used in the fogger, b/c tap water has minerals that build up in the system and leads to a premature death on the fogger's part. But I remember something on here about distilled water not being good for amphibians, though it can be used for misting (?).

So as long it's used only in the fogger, it is safe to use distilled water?

Speaking of foggers I've also heard that the Repti-Fogger (the one I'm eying) has a habit of ceasing to working after only a month or so. But I've heard others claim it works fine even after a year or so of use. What's the deal with this?

Many of the world’s nearly 6,000 frog species make wonderful pets that may live for 10, 20 or even 50 years. Among them we find creatures that glide, brood their eggs in vocal sacs, form lifelong pair bonds and exhibit other fascinating behaviors. While the smallest is barely as large as a pea, the nine-pound African Bullfrog can chase lions away from its tadpoles! Today I’d like to introduce some of my favorites, each of which is hardy enough for beginners yet so interesting that herpetologists – myself included – regularly keep them as pets. Please be sure to let me know about your own “best pet frogs” by posting below. I know strange question but as I can't find these three it is a good possibility that the ferret could have found them.

Hello,

first off I am new to this board. I hope some one here can help me. I have two african clawed frogs, have had them for about 10 years. just moved them into a new tank with a few fish, and of coarse, soem of the fish develop Ick. Now i know many of the medicines can be harmful to the frogs, so i have set up a temporary second tank for them while i medicate the fish. My question is after treatment is done, what do i have to do in order to get the water safe to have the frogs put back in. I am useing Tetra IckGuard.

any ideas/advice will be helpful, i have not started the medication yet hoping to maybe get some input first.

Thanks!

So today i discovered my ruby eye tree frogs laid eggs. I have 4 groups and about a total of 100 eggs.
Looks like I am the first breeder of this breed of frog in history. Its quite an accomplishment! =)
Just so everyone knows the eggs are blue. Compared to my red eye eggs that are eggshell white. =)

Im sure ill be getting a large amount of requests to sell these since they are the first ever bred in captivity so please private me if interested. Make me an offer because i hate putting a price tag on things unless its been done before. I do know however that being captive bred and first of their kind it should be significantly higher than the wild caught ones.

Species: Leptodactylus pentadactylus

Common Names: Smoky jungle frog, south american bullfrog, foam nest frog
(not to be confused with Chiromantis rufescens) common bullfrog

Other Similar Species: Rana species, Ceratophrys species

Distribution: Amazon basin, Peru, Brazil, Colombia

Temperatures: 24 -35 °C

Humidity: 80-100%

Life Span: 3-5 years (all are most likely wild caught so life span may vary)

Difficulty: Beginner to intermediate

Status: Least concern (rare in captivity)

Enclosure Size: ten gallon inch rule applies (80 gallons for 8 inch frog) These frogs are
terrestrial but not as aquatic as their green north american counterparts so do not
provide a large water area but instead a large water bowl or a divided 80 tro 20% ratio
of land and water dividing using plexiglass or cork flats. Provide plants for the frog to hide
under during the day becaus ethis is a nocturnal species.

Substrate: These frogs are a burrowing species, substrates such as cocoa husk are commonly
used for the Pacman frogs and are successful being used for this species as well, for a more
naturalistic substrate choice, ABG mix from josh's frogs or teh Atlanta botanical gardens is a
mix of many substrates used for dart frogs. this mix of substrate dose not restrict to dart
frogs and is very attractive in any terrarium. Be aware that this frog species is more active
that a pacman frog and have powerful hind legs for jumping as well as digging.

Food: Crickets can be fed to young individuals. Roaches of any sort can be used but use caution
with Hissing roaches, they have a harder shell and is more difficult to digest. Superworms can be fed
as an alternative to mealworms because they have less chitin in their exoskelleton, cut the heads
off before feeding to prevent any bites. Rodents should only be fed sparsingley to avoid obesity
issues and possible blindness

Breeding: No successful breeding programs are available in captivity without induced hormones so
most if not all smoky jungle frogs are wild caught specimins. Breeding could be achieved in captivity
by using a large water area and using a rain system after eggs are laid. in the wild, the frogs breed
Before the rainy season so their eggs can be washed away into the surrounding lakes and rivers.
males will call from water areas and use auxillary amplexux on the female. after amplexux is achieved,
the male will create a Foam nest by rubbing his legs together with his mucus used to hydrate the frog
in times of dryness, the eggs are laid within this "foam nest" and are washed away by the rains, eggs
will hatch within one to three days and tadpoles will be omniverous even feeding on their dead
brothers and sisters.

Sexing: Males are smaller than females, have darker throats and will develop nuptual pads to compete
for females and for the use of mating, Males will also have considerably large "popeye" like arms for clasping
the female. Females of this species are much larger and fatter ranging from 8 inches for large females, males
usually attain 5 inches at the largest.

**A note on this species**
Smoky jungle frogs have a mild toxin used for defense, be sure to wash your hands before and after handelling
this frog and try to avoid contact with eyes, tears will neutralize the toxins but if eyes start to sting, was them
out emmediately with cold water.

Wasn't getting any answers in the Pyxie section, so I'll try here. . .

I've recently realized my dream of placing my adult female Pyxie in a 24L 18W 12H exo terra. I love being able to get in there and work (change the water, take out Frog for feeding, etc.) without needing to move the lamp(s) somewhere like I had to when she was in a 15 gallon long tank.

Now I've got my 50W infrared for the main means of heat on the land and a small, adjustable submersible heater for her removable pool. on the land side my 8" lamp only covers half of the land side, leaving half of it unheated. I have put one of those nocturnal bulbs (night-glo), again 50W, in a 5.5 clamp on that side to keep it at a constant 77-80 degrees - daytime temps under the infrared are mid to high 80s during the day, and high 70s to low 80s at night. Temps in the room itself are usually in the mid 70s, unless somebody turns the AC on.

Just so there's one less thing for me to clean, I was thinking about dispensing with the water heater (efficient as it is) and placing the night-glo light over the warm to keep it warm, and then place a heat mat to the side of the cage where night-glo was. Experience tells me side-mounted mats aren't the most efficient means of heating. But if I put plastic wrap over that side, would it trap enough of the heat the mat emanates to keep that side warm enough (I'd like a minimum temp of 75 on said side of inside of the cage)?

The mat I have this thing to control it with:
Amazon.com: Zoo Med ReptiTemp 500R Remote Sensor Thermostat: Pet Supplies

And so's there's no misunderstandings, here's a rough drawing of what I'm talking about (click to enlarge):

white springtails $10
Silver springtails $12
pink springtails $10

shipping is $12.00 anywhere in the continental United States. I'm currently taking orders and will begin shipping Monday June 3rd. I have a limited amount of each culture. Springtails are perfect for feeding small froglets and make great vivarium clean up crews. My cultures are mite free. All cultures are raised on a 50% ABG 50% leaf litter mix. Cultures are fed active yeast and watered weekly. This process helps me to ensure a clean culture.

PM me your order and ill send you my PayPal address.

The number of cultures I have available breakdown like this:
3 whites
6 pinks
7 silvers.

Silvers are very new to the hobby but are thriving in all of my vivariums and master cultures. Every hobbyist ive spoken to loves these guys. They are the smallest springtails available but are very easy to culture. I split my cultures every 2 weeks without fail.

This is an african dwarf frog, under my aquarium light it looks a lot whiter than this but under regular light it looks like he is just shedding his skin.
I did notice a big chunk of skin floating around the tank a couple of days ago, I just would like to know if my frog looks sick, thank you:)

Hello,

I am new to the site. I've been searching feverishly trying to find a possible explanation for why my White's tree frog, Gomez, is not acting normally to no avail. I've had him for roughly 6 months. He has always had a very healthy appetite and has been really vocal. But recently that has all changed. He hasn't been interested in crickets at all and I have not heard him vocalize for quite some time. The other wtf, Milton, in the tank with him has always been more reserved when it comes to croaking and eating. Milton is acting completely normal, actively going after crickets and vocalizing frequently. I noticed a week or two ago that Gomez appeared to be shedding and was just hanging out in the water dish all the time. Then i noticed that his shed appeared to be gone but he wasn't opening his eyes and his mouth seems "weird" like he's still in the middle of swallowing his skin. The tank is kept between 75 and 80 degrees and between 50 and 60 percent humidity. There are no herp vets anywhere near me so this is really my only option. From what i've read some sort of respiratory issue seems to be most likely, but i am unsure. I could just be over-exaggerating a bad shed? Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. I've attached some pictures, they aren't the best angle or quality but hopefully they help a bit.
