Firstly, frank has been eating really well. He appears to be using his tongue better or that might be my imagination but he is definitely a lot better at identifying and snatching food up.
He's had a good amount of the multivitamin over the last week or so. Things are looking up! :)
I noticed that a fair amount of my waxworms had pupated so I have began (I hope) a culture of them. It was easy enough to find a beginners guide to the food mix for them, I've taken a tall Tupperware tub from the kitchen and my Mum is now missing a pop sock :D
The experiment begins!

I've now physically witnessed Frank eat a waxworm covered in the mixed powders frogsmile
The relief is considerable!
Hopefully this is the beginning of the recovery from short tongue. Feeding guides for the multivitamins would suggest that I dust with the mixed once a week and the calcium D3 every other time but I'll obviously have to tailor this to Frank. I don't want to overdose him but in the same vein I don't want to under supply him when he is obviously deficient. More reading required methinks.

I know sometimes frogs go off their food when shedding but I'm so anxious about his need to get multivitamins into him- especially the vitamin A to counteract the short tongue- I really want to see him get the vitamins into him.
Update: *I think he may have eaten a waxworm dusted with calcium, D3 and multivitamin*

I have a couple of situations. First I got this tree frog that has an injured leg and its opan and white with red on it and he can't climb tha tank and he is not eating. I tryed using neosporin with out that medicated part but that still does not seem to work. He won't eat and is getting really skinny. I think its red tree leg but im not sure. I got him online and he could have caught it because he was stressed he was like this when they shipped him to me. :( I don't know if i can save him. cant afford to take him to tha vet right now. Then in the othar tank I have 4 white tree frogs just like him and a couple of them their skin is peeling won is peling around the nose and eye and the other one is peling on the mouth area tha other two are fine so I just don't get it. They were around the one that had the injured leg until i seperated him but their injury doesn't look like his. The two are fine though. The ones that have their skin peeling are eating still a lot. I did have a plant lily in their but I took it out cause I think won of the frogs started itching. Is their anything i can give them if its an allergy? Thanks all for your help appreciate the help i can get. Their temp in thear tank is 74 to 80 and I spray tha tank with spring water every hour like im supposed to and I give them spring water to swim in and they have frog moss and reptile bark in thear tanks.:(

I thought perhaps I could use this blog to keep note of Frank and his vitamin issues. frogsmile
Firstly, I'm glad I've started to keep a track of his feeding and bathing/pooping schedule even though it felt a little weird at first. I've noticed a definite pattern emerging of his eating for two or three days, a two day break during which he relieves himself in the water then back to eating on the third day.
This has also allowed me to tailor his dusting of calcium and vitamin D3 better and hopefully when his multi vitamins arrive it means I can dose him properly without worrying about him not eating it or the dust wiping off on the soil.
At the moment I'm not sure how bad on the general scale his (what I assume is) short tongue is. After watching a video I took of him last year feeding he is definitely not using it properly and more bashes his face towards the soil.
I hope the multivitamins work as fast as the calcium supplement worked for him. Time will tell.

Well since the IP cam/ laser cat toy I hacked together last week
I have had another brain storm.

I know that a lot of keepers would love to keep an eye on their pets
when they are away.

I have a few of these cheap IP cameras lying around some of them are broken some are ok.

Well when you actually take one apart there really not all that complicated.
You have the following inside the camera.
A digital CCD board that's actually the sensing element of the camera and the lens.
A LED module that emits infrared light for when the camera is in night vision mode
Two small stepper motors that do the pan and tilt of the camera.
To limit switches to detect where the camera is at the beginning and end of the pan and the beginning end of the tilt.

And one main board that has all the electronics on it.
Everything inside the camera plugs together with small cables and it's not hard to unplug and reengineer the camera.

What I'm thinking of doing is using rods from a scanner and the shuttle of the scanner to move front and back and left and right at the top of the enclosure of the terrarium. kind of like a plotter.
In all actuality parts from an old scanner would be a perfect testbed for this. It would have all the necessary cables and mechanical parts to make the shuttle with the camera on it.
I would just have to set up the little stepper motors to drive the shuttle and the limit switches so the shuttle will stop at the right points so it won't bind up the motors..
Another feature I would love to have is to be able to remotely check the temperature and humidity from remote.
Now since I already have a temperature and humidity controller I could probably just simply put the display of the controller at one corner of the enclosure where the camera can see it. That would be an easy way of doing it but then it will make it kind of hard to see it when I am in front of the tank.

Well I think I have a good concept going. And I think I have all the parts I need so it's time to get cracking.

More to come soon.

Hi I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out what is going on with my froggie friend. A couple days ago he had his left hand sticking up out of the water and I noticed it was red, lookng closer it looked like it was mssing. I immediately did a water and used some melafix.

He is housed in a 40 gallon with another acf, 2 goldfish, 2 dalmation mollies, a few mickey mouse moons, an apple snail and a couple algae eaters. There are two filters whisper (20-40gal) and a fluval u3 (24-40gal). There is also a bubbler and plenty of decorations (I.e. boat, plants, sea shells) with gravel and marble substrate.

I have been watching him very closely and noticed his fingers are regenerating already, it's only been 3 days :) but his other hand has a reddish color to it, his skin looks possibly like fungus has hit him, like he is shedding. He also has a small bump on his lower back.....so needless to say I'm kind of freaking out.

Hey everyone. I've recently noticed a problem with my white dumpy tree frog, and I've been attempting to research the condition further, but have had no luck.

My tree frog, Shnooks, is about 7 years old and within the last 3 months lost her friend/cage mate to old age. She has had strange symptoms such tilting her head to the left, her left eye seems a bit swollen as well, and she swims in circles in her water dish. I've also noticed her left ear is smaller as well. She still has an appetite and is eating normally, but I suspect some kind of neurological problem.

Anytime she is in her water dish, she spins in a circle constantly and doesn't stop for a while. The dish is shallow enough to where she can't 'drown', but this is still a concern.

Again, the main symptoms I've spotted are the tilt of the head, swelling of the eye, and a smaller ear. Other than that, coloring, appetite, shedding/molting is normal.

Does anyone have an idea or possibly know what is going on? If so, is this treatable by home-remedies or should I consult a veterinarian?

Hi all.

I am fairly new to the frog world. After a serious illness my daughter wanted a pet of her own. At the pet store they had spotted burrowing frogs and tadpoles so thats how we got started.

We didn't have success with this type of frog so a few months later they had the common brown tree frogs of the Adelaide hills and we tried those. We had great success and the following summer invested in some tadpoles of the same type which all successfully morphed into frogs. We have 8. 3 of them are 2 years old and 5 of them are 1 year old.

I then found some Perons Tree frogs and they are quite fascinating and large with strong voices. We have 5 adults.

Then last year I purchased 2 large Green and Gold Bell Frogs. They are stunning and sadly in decline in Australia. When our Govt. built the Homebush Stadium for the Sydney Olympics they had to rehome around 3000 of this species. It didn't work and they are now listed as Vulnerable. So a month ago when the same pet store was selling tadpoles I bought the whole lot and hope that I can get them breeding in the future and get them back into the wild. This little guy is just over a week old and is around 2 cms long.

surprisedfrog
Have I had a weekend. All 6 of the little guys morphed with some clearly taking to the task of eating well. I check them each day and do a head count, change water etc. and on Friday morning I found the littlest one (the last one to morph) all curled up like a rock. When I touched it it felt like wood and in my mind was clearly dead. I cried for a while then went back to take him (I call all mine hims until I know different) and bury him in the garden and saw that he had moved slightly. I then panicked and thought okay he needs water. So I doused him in special frog water and then he moved again but was clearly on life support. I then got a top of a bottle filled it with only so much water that he could lay in without drowning and then sat for two hours (didn't go to work) and watched as he came back to life. Some hours later he jumped out of the "spa" but in my mind was clearly still struggling. I couldn't tell whether he has been eating so decided to take him out and place him in a home all of his own until I could nurse him back to health. My daughter suggested I send a friend with him to keep him warm (as they do like to snuggle up together). We call it "stack o frogs". So the two littlest dudes are now in ICU (The Intensive Care Unit) and I worked out last night, that this little guy doesn't know or doesn't know how to get into his water pond. So I gently place him in his bottle top every day and yesterday, whilst he was in, a cricket jumped in and he ate it. This is the first time I think he has eaten in a week.
Phew. I just hope I can get him stronger. frogsmile
