My first pyxie

She is a beauty....but her colouring is very unusual. I have three P. adspersus and none of them ever had markings like that. Is there a chance she was sold under the wrong name? I included a couple of pics of one of my Pyxies when he was young-I got him when he was the size of a Canadian toonie, yet except for loosing his vertical stripe, he looks pretty much the same now.

Yes, I've noticed that her colour is very unusual... I'm gessing maybe it can be a variation of the colouration of your first pic...

Another strange thing is that her skin is completely smooth... and as we see on your pics, pyxies use to have (I don't know waht to call them) rough strips..

Here in Portugal it's very possible that she has been sold with a wrong name

I agree-he or she is absolutely beautiful and I, personally, wouldn't care what it really was as long as it was healthy. I love the markings and smooth texture, and from the sounds of it, she is well on her way to becoming plump and happy! Congrats on her-if I had seen her in the petstore, I would have bought her too.

That's what I'm talking about I'm very happy with this purchase.

Btw, I've heard that there in USA pyxies can cost over 60$... Here in Portugal I use to see them for 25-35€.. This one cost me 20€ (24$).. Weird, normaly your prices are much better than ours.

This is definitely a beautiful frog, but it is definitely not a Pyxiecephalus Adspersus. It is most likely one of the variation of the dwarfs. But congrats on the gorgeous frog!

Yep, TJ got it. That is a dwarf pixie. Some variation of Pyxicephalus edulis. So questions about size and coloration, look at P. edulis. (or that is the closest we can call it right now)

I paid about $60 Canadian for my first male, around $50 for my female and my other male I got for free as someone was giving him away and he is already between 7-8 years old. I would love to find one like what you just bought...not that I need anymore frogs!!

We are having the "great debate" over at the Pyxicephalis Differences thread on telling the difference between the species in the genus Pyxicephalus. For those of you who want to know, we come up with four characteristics that P. edulis has that is distinctive from adspersus:

1. the white spot in the tympanum
2. the distance between eye and tympanum is about the same as the diameter of the eye
3. vertical bars on upper jaw
4. an "interorbital" or "interocular" bar that goes across the top of the head connecting the two eyes

Thats a nice Dwarf, but i really dislike Dwarfs they are so tiny and they dont even grow they just getter fatter.

Thanks! I've been visiting that thread and here's the problem: I don't think mine is a P. edulis... I think it's some kind of not described dwarf or a hybrid...

This one already trys to eat my fingers, I don't need him to try to eat my hand Just joking, I really like adspersus too
